  • UDS question

New to the forums. Amazed at all the info there is here. Just had a question as I'm about to start my build tomorrow. My drum that I got is in almost perfect condition. It had coconut oil in it. The inside doesn't look like it has a liner, looks almost like bare metal, almost like stainless, just coated with coconut oil. Do I need to wire brush the inside still even after a good burn out with 6 pallets that I plan on doing.

Can't wait to get this thing done and put it to work. I've got about $200 in material that is ready to be assembled!!!!

I wouldn't waste any time wire brushing it unless it has some rust. If it had coconut oil in it you probably don't even need to burn it out. But hey, it's fun to build a big fire.

Drill the intake holes first the burn away. After that, assemble, season, and cook.

      And to the forum.

I wouldn't burn out if it's bare metal inside. I built a couple that had enough peanut oil residue that they were ready for seasoning. Glad to help with any other questions you might have.

Welcome to Smoked-Meat... as far as the drum..burning it can’t hurt. Worst case is you have to re-season it. Maybe drill your vents and drop a basket in and let it run and see what happens? If it just “browns” up nicely..I’d say yer good to go.

Thanks alot for the advice. I will get to drilling on it later on today. Probly will just wire brush the outside to strip the paint. I bought some High heat primer. Along with 2 cans of flat black high heat Paint as well. Excited to get going on this project.
