  • make your own walk in cooler

A walk in cooler is not that hard to make. I have made my own, it is 8x8 and insulated 6" with styrophoam (floor, celing, walls and door)
the next thing you need is a good 12,000btu AC, I have bought one from HAIER
    http://www.haieramerica.com/cool-hea...tioner-esa412k
this is the one that I'm using and works great, 4 years running for me now :) You can put the AC on a energy saving mode, and what it does is shut it down when the temp is low enough, and up here in northern Ontario Canada, the nights are pretty cool that it does not run at all, and even during the day if it is cool enough. During the hot summer months I figured that it is costing an extra 15 bucks a month on my hydro bill... not to bad for an 8x8 fridge to sit in, play a game of Cribbage while having a beer that won't go warm on ya!!
The next thing you need to purchace is a "by pass" device and the one that I got is from a company called "Store it cold"
www.storeitcold.com/ It was absolutly nothing to instal and does not require any AC expertise, anyone can do it.
I keep hanging quaters of moose, deer, bear and beef in my cooler and have never had a problem.
I keep an eye on humidity in my cooler and run the dehumdifing program on the AC a couple times a week if necessary. I have put this cooler in the back of my garage in a seperate addition and have the back side of the AC pointed into my garage, so it is doing two things for me... keep the cooler cold, and puting warm air into my garage.
Please don't hesitate to ask me any questions if this is something you think you may try :)

Might be more expensive to run & more difficult to maintain safe temps down here in the lower 48.... Great idea, though.

Not sure it would keep 40° in summer here (Florida).

One of our members Goat has a set up like this with the Cool Bot.. He is in South Texas and as far as I know, he has NO issues with this..

I was skeptical around 3-4 years ago when he was looking into this.. And really wanted to drill down into the workings of this devise.. I contacted the owner and spent around an hour on the phone talking and taking notes.. This item should and will do as advertised..

So if your in the market for building a small WIC.. You can get out really cheap on the refrigeration side if you go this route..

Me, I have no need for it.. From time of kill to being dressed, skinned, and quartered in my cooler on ice is around an hour to hour and a half..

I've never seen an AC unit that would run at 40° without freezein up, I gotta get some more info on this! (like I need one more project)
Cool idea, I didn't know they made units that could pull it off!
CoolBot looks like a neat device.

A bud has one just big enough to hang a couple deer in it till he gets around to cuttin em up. Electric lift and all. It usually only has to run a couple days at a time.

1 - 3 C,,, 33 - 38 F and I have no problem doing that during the summer months when it is about 28 - 33 c (82 - 92F) one thing to keep in mind is that meat will start to freeze at those temps... I may live in northern Ontario Canada, but it does get quit hot and humid during the summer months, and as for this hunting season, Guys were in a HURRY to get their kill in a cooler ASAP as the first two weeks were still quite warm anywhere from 23 - 28 c (73 - 83F) My walk in is 8x8 and the AC is a 12,000 BTU 115 V, but if I could I would go with a 24,000 208/240 :)
I don't have pics of the cool bot itself, but here is a couple pics of a young small 2 year old bull moose hanging in the cooler... and All my customers meat hangs for 4 days before I'll take a knife at it, If it is a real large bull / cow I will hang for 7 - 10 days, this year My uncle got one that weighed in at 718lbs dressed, so that one hung for 10 days and lost 16 lbs, he called me last night and said it was aged perfect and barley needed a knife to cut it after cooking :)

I can hang about 4 bull/cow moose or 6 calfs, and about 8 deer....

what you do is take off the front grill gaurd, there is a little temp sensor pushed into the "fins" of the unit, gently pull it out, take the sensor from the CoolBot and overlap the two sensors, wrap tightly with foil tape and just tuck away. What this sensor does is "trick" the AC unit that it is warmer then it really is, and cause the pump to turn on the AC unit... There is another sensor off the Coolbot that is your frost sensor, put that one into the spot where the AC sensor was pushed into the fins. turn on the AC and set the temp as low as it will go (ussualy 61f) turn on the coolbot and set the temp that you want to keep the cooler at. I set mine to 2c (35f) there is also a Frost setting, I set that to 1c (34f)
As for hydro, I figure that it is costing me about an extra 15 bucks a month in hydro.. not bad for a total of 1000 bucks for the entire build, and I've had it for 4 years now and have made back my money and then some!! :)
