            Majinor Update!!

I fired up the WSM and the controller to cook a bunch of butts last weekend... It worked great until the fire caught up with a too big of a chunk of sugar maple... big temp spike! I yanked the wood out, and all was well again.

I have some issues with not being able to set an upper temp alarm... seems to want to go off at 250, unless I have my target temp set at 250 or above. I am sure I am doing something wrong... stay tuned on that.

              Hey Phil,

When you take the lid off and the measured temp drops, does the fan kick on right away? Or does it wait awhile before it tries to compensate?

question??? what i have read from the WSM and the UDS folks is they pretty much hold temps all by them selves... like for 10 hours??? so i kinda thinking sup with the controller on these two smokers. now on a SFB smoker would be a different story. would like to see someone test one on there chargriller or whatever.

                  It kicks on fairly quickly...

I know E, it might be overkill on a WSM, but I needed to try it. I have some more experimenting to do yet...

Is there any way to override that for when you take the lid off? If you power off the controller, does it lose the setpoint and alarm settings power it back on? Does it freak out if you unplug the thermocouple?

I can't speak to the WSM aspect of it but it has been my experience with the UDS that that is MOSTLY true . . . if one is using briquettes. If one is using lump and the chunk size varies quite a bit, the temp tends to wander a lot more. Even with briquettes, I have had the temp drop off considerably and the drum does need some intervention at times.

For me it's a toy kind of an that I wanted insurance policy to help to play with with stability cause I thought on the long it was cool smokes.

Really, it took maybe 30 seconds to a minute for it to realize the lid was off. Yes, you can (and I did) unplug the unit from the power source, and it does remember where you had set it last.

Still playing and learning... is this thing necessary? It's not about necessity, it's about WANT...

                        Stay tuned...
