  • Lavatools Thermowand

Anyone try one of these things? Looks like it is competing with a Thermapen, but significantly cheaper. I ordered one and it will be here in a couple days. I will post my findings of it compared to the Thermapen.

Marty stumbled across this too... I ordered one and have used it twice so far. I did a side by side comparison with our thermapen and it is was reading the same and read dang near as fast. You can tell it is made out of a cheaper plastic and I don't think it will handle "drops" on the driveway as well as a thermapen but time will tell. We also got a chuckle over the fact that in the manual it read Dishwasher Safe - pretty sure I wouldn't chance that!!

That would certainly be a good test of their "lifetime warranty"

Or a smaller current load, or it's a lie? TP could just be honest and say even at -10f operating temps we are comfortable with 2500 hours, but lets say 1500 is fine. Heck 1500 hours is a lotta lotta uses anyway. Like some Chinese PC power supplies, rated at 500 watts, put 400w on it and it lets the smoke out. It is slower and less temp variations etc. And electronics keep getting smaller. The Thermapen is faster so it needs more POWER!

Dunno, looking forward to the tests.

Ok, the little brown toy truck arrived at casa AJ tonight and he dropped off a padded envelope from Amazon. The Thermowand has arrived! Let's see how the Thermawand (TW) compares to the Thermapen (TP).

First off the TW is shorter than the TP. The TP measures up at 6.125" and the TW is a scant 4.5" The TW probe is also shorter coming in at 2.75" vs the 4.5" on the TP.

Ok for those that think size does not matter, we will move on to the accuracy comparison. I filled a beer mug with crushed ice and then added water. I arranged the probes so the tips would be at the same depth. They look pretty close to me.

Ok, cold is easy. Lets go up to the higher end of the scale. I heated some water in the tea kettle and poured a mug full of water. I placed both probes in the steamy water and the results are pretty similar.

Alrighty then, IMO the readings are close enough for government work. Hmm, what's next...let's talk speed. We have all read about one color TP being faster than the others but we all know that is crap. Mine is the fastest because it has flames on it. Any hot rodder knows flames sometimes reduces elapsed times on the track and always on the street. There is no way the little TW can come close. Actually they both lock on a temp within 4-5 seconds.

So overall impression is this thing rocks! For the price the TW will hang with the TP. Now long will it perform to this level? I have no idea. I have only had it a couple hours. But for $25 it's hard to beat. This is my story and I am sticking to it.
