I'm building a double barrel smoker like the one Jimbob has posted. I got my stove part kits, cut the barrel, put on the parts. I built a fire in it to burn off the paint. I stood it up right with the cast Iron door on the ground and filled it half way with oak. It got plenty hot, so hot the bottom of the barrel became translucent and I could see the outline of one of the logs in the fire. Anyway, the next day I took a small grinder with a wire wheel to it, the outside paint came off fine.
The paint inside the barrel, came off without too much difficultly, it was almost like a red powder. I have a question, about the paint in the barrel. When you look straight at it, it pretty much looks like bare metal, in the shade you can still see some red, its almost like a rust. I've gone over it with a grinder a couple of times, while doing it, it looks like the metal is bare but at a different angle it still has a shade of red.
I'm thinking of finishing the build and just giving it 3 or 4 good burns before using it for smoking. Anyone who had use these drums think that will be a problem?
