  • Anyone do a mean sloppy joe?

I have been tasked to make sloppy joes and baked beans for my wife's boss's daughter's graduation party. About 100 people will serve themselves. I've never made sloppy joes from scratch. Anyone have a good recipe or other advice?

Robs got a good recipe there, but to that my wife would add a little yellow mustard and a can of chicken and rice soup to a lb or 2 of burger. Is very goood

Thanks for the recipe, chefrob, and the additions, minnbill. The party is not until May but I want to do some small scale practicing between now and then.

I'll be following this! We make crappy ones. We use ketchup, brown sugar and mustard and they are always just not right.

funny how we all do things very similar
            1 pound hamburger or chuck
            1 med onion diced
            1 bell pepper diced
            2 cloves garlic minced
            1 cup heinz ketchup
            3 TBSP brown
            1 TBSP worcestershire
            couple of shakes tabasco

I brown the meat onions pepper and garlic at the same time
            drain the fat
throw in everything else and stir
simmer a little bit and you are done

            good luck

Here is mine it's a take on a taster which is a stand in Norfolk Nebraska where my grandparents lived. We would get them everytime we visit...

You boil all of this together 5 pounds ground beef, 3teas. mustard. 3teas.horseradish 3 teas. worchestershire sauce 4 oz ketchup if this sauce does not equal one cup add water to make it one cup.
Put ground beef in pan add 8 oz. water 8 oz onion 1 teas. accent mix in ketchup sauce and boil 25 minutes The key to Tastee Beefs is mustard on the bun also. I cut this recipe in half and it comes out fine. Also those are heaping teaspoons on the spices. Enjoy!

Sloppy Joes were the first thing i ever cooked. My mother is an awesome cook with all the old school recipes etc. But one thing she makes I never cared for were her Sloppy Joes. She did the chicken rice soup bit as well but way too tame for me. So I kind of made my own. Mom actually makes hers like mine now days...

Unfortunatly I have never measured anything going in much but is all by looks and taste but here is kind of how I make mine.

2 lbs ground, pretty much use straight elk or deer, browned
1 onion finely chopped and sauted until semi cooked
Add the meat back to the onions and add the following...
1 can tomato soup, have used my homemade soup with great results as well.
Ketchup to get the consistancy right, also Alex's homade ketchup works well too.
Add a can or 2 of mushrooms, salt if you need it(i dont add any), red pepper to taste, and brown sugar to give it that hint of sweet that all good Sloppy Joes have. Let simmer until all ingreds have melded and serve on nice frresh buns.

For some reason the leftovers taste better than the original batch...

Mine is similar to Chef Robs, but I add a splash of apple cider vinegar and probably more worsy sauce than his.

I have a friend who adds ground up radish in thiers and it is pretty darn tasty! I have done this and it does give it that little extra boost!

Not saying you need to try it this time but sometime in the future when you make them give it a try... just grind them up/shred well!

Hope it turns out well... cant go bad if you ask me.. use those Hawaiian rolls and you will be a rock star!!

Mine is similar to Rob's also, and I like to add fresh ground horse radish to the mix. Never tried the apple cider vinegar... hmmm.

only sloppy joe i've ever made comes from a can and gives me heartburn something fierce! I'll have to try making it from scratch one of these days. Thanks for the recipes!
