  • Milk Days - 5/29/2010

This will be my first competition. Small contest some smoking, some grilling, figured it would be a good starting point. Not a KCBS event, but sanctioned by the Illinois BBQ society.

14 teams, one day cook doing ribs, chicken, pork, and burgers.

I will be bringing my WSM & my large Weber kettle up to compete. Looks like fun way to spend a Saturday.

Had a good time at my first competition yesterday. Hot sunny day, lots of cool folks, and alot of beer and bbq. I didnt win, or place in any category, but hit all my turn in times, and was really happy with my food. None of the folks with the big expensive rigs, or alot of trophies won, the judges were local dignitaries so i am not sure what that says.

                        The good:

Milk days was well run, and organized. Lots of nice folks, sharing food, and drink.

                        The bad:

Not the event, but more my mindset, Although I had a good time, I think I am too old to be loading up my truck with smoker, grill, food, etc, and lugging it around the state. The last thing I wanted to do after sooking all day was load up the truck, and drive 114 miles back home. I think I am happy being a backyard guy, thats just me. I am entered in another small cookoff in September, I am now debating if i will do it.

I am downloading pics now, if I have time before I head down to Chicago for a crawfish boil I will post them.

Nothing wrong with staying a backyard cook. Ya gave it hell; at least you know what it takes now. I can't see it in my blood either Jim. I like going to them but never once wanted to enter.

                          for trying.

                            thanks rick,

I tip my hat to folks who compete week in and week out.
