  • KS Ground Beef Recall 03-10-2011

A southern Kansas packing plant has recalled more than 7 tons of ground beef products after lab tests detected E. coli.

The Arkansas City Traveler says Creekstone Farms Premium Beef confirmed Wednesday that it had recalled 14,148 pounds of ground beef.

The company says the tainted meat was produced Feb. 22 and shipped to Missouri, Iowa, Arizona, California, Georgia, Indiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Washington.

Creekstone and the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service say they have received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of the questionable meat.

Each case label bears the establishment number "EST. 27" inside the USDA mark of inspection. These products were produced on Feb. 22, 2011, and were shipped to firms in Ariz., Calif., Ga., Ind., Iowa, Mo., N.C., Ohio, Pa. and Wash. for further processing and/or distribution. It is important to note that the above listed products may have been repackaged into consumer-size packages and sold under different retail brand names. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on FSIS' website at http://www.fsis.usda.gov/FSIS_Recalls/
    Open_Federal_Cases/index.asp.

The problem was discovered through third party lab results which confirmed a positive result for E. coli O157:H7. FSIS and the company have received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of these products. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider.

Mass meat processing = mass meat recalls.

Make a change, contract with a local rancher and meat processor for a side or whole cow.

I think about this stuff every time I take out another package of home ground elk. I can't remember the last time I bought cow burger. If it isn't something to make you sick, they grind up the damn bones with it.

We've been grinding our own for a couple years now... granted, it is store bought chunks of beef, but it ain't got chunks of "stuff" in it.

But ya know what, as time goes on this will just get worse. Federal and state guidelines do little if any good when it comes to the really big processing plants. Thats why they own their own law firms. So they can stretch out any lawsuits and such. Its the little meat places on the corner that get hammered by the regs and trying to keep costs down. Big giant meat processing plants are just like all other corporations, they cut every corner and take on the risks, if they get nabbed the lawyers just drag it all out and deflect attention off of them and onto the shipper, feed company or who-ever.

Any of you ever been in a big meat processing plant? I have and it's not as sterile of an environment as they want you to believe. Serious, blood and guts everywhere and they are wreckless on the production line to no end. Poultry processing and especially the hotdog/bologna places. Been a while since one of the tv stations has done an undercover series, but it will happen again. Hard to get employee's to abide by sanitary rules when they don't habla the language that the guidelines are printed on. Here in Kansas that is slowly being resolved, especially now with the new state leadership. They are tightening up enforcement on the illegals around here. As a result, them meat packing places out west are starting to have problems hiring people in all of a sudden.

And Bill, we offer everyone that buys our cows the same thing. Never had anyone bring any back. They may get a little upset when they come back around at ordering time and see prices go up a bit, but they keep coming. I ain't getting rich off of it thats for sure. In April we are sending our first Galloways off for processing. good meat right there. Hopefully we will be weaning everyone off the angus and onto the Galloways over the next 3 years. Better tasting beef if ya ask me. Better marble and fat distribution, less bone and about the same weight ratio. This fall we have 2 Galloway cows that are expecting Hereford crossed calves. Had 2 famalies want to give it a try.
