  • Akorn Kamado Kooker By Char-Griller

I love my gas grill for the convenience, but do miss the great taste of a charcoal grill. Was considering buying a Weber with my tax return. (What little I got back). Last weekend I was at Menard's helping my son with a home repair project. Ran into this crazy contraption. It was on sale for 248.00. Couldn't resist. What can I say? I like to be different.

Wednesday evening I put it together. Went together without any hitches and nothing missing. Was impressed with the construction. Double walled and insulated. All the inner parts are porcelain coated. Heavy cast iron grate. The bottom comes off to empty ashes. Both the lid and bottom have gaskets and latches. Even the chimney has an O-ring on it. Supposed to be air tight. More on that.

Thursday evening I fired it up to season the grate and burn off any oils and such. They recommend Lump, but didn't know that. Had some RO in the shed. Used that. Lit a full chimney. Like to season cast iron at 500 degrees. Easily got it to settle in at about 480 at the grate using the Maverick. The thermo in the lid is a 100 degrees lower. It's also much higher than grate level. It cruised at that temp for 3 hours and showed no sign of slowing down. Shut both the vent and chimney hoping to smother it. After 3 hours it was still at 350 degrees. Obviously air was getting in. Finally left it and went to bed.

Friday morning almost all of the charcoal had burned up and the grate was a nice dark black. Looked into the air issue. The chimney was not down properly. Adjusted the O-ring and got it tightened down. Loosened the bolts to the lid hinge. Pushed the back of the lid down as far as I could get it and retightened the bolts. I curled the hook part of the latch and got the lid to really close tight. Did the same with the bottom latches.

Mixed up some Mad Hunky pork brine. Threw in 4 big bone in pork chops. Went to work and day dreamed about dinner.

      Definitely a cool looking unit.

Someone else bought one a while back, don't remember who. I think they had good things to say about it.

Thanks, liking it so far. Just have to get used to it's traits. I'll post more on the removable center.

Hehe. Fell asleep at the helm last night. I was seasoning some CI for the son. Have to run to the grandson's Bday party. Might not be until tomorrow. But they were delicious.

Congrats on the new rig! I have eyeballed them at Menard's and really like the set up for the price... I have been tempted to get one a few times, but my wife has always been with, I gotta sneak into town without her I think!

You won't be sorry. It's unreal. Super efficient. 1/2 a chimney of briquettes today. Food is done and it's still going 2 hours later.

While at the store, I looked for a cover. Spotted some charcoal chimneys. I have a cheap one, but this one caught my eye. It had the same brand name on it with an extra lever. Pull the lever and the bottom falls out like a trap door.

It fits over the center hole. Meant to dump the coals through the grate without removing it. Would think it will send ashes all over, but some thought went into it. Haven't used it this way, but I bought one just in case.

I was looking for a cover and am now eyeing up the pizza stone. Just might spring for it. Not sure. They tend to break. But it does sound like some of the backyard diffusers and pizza ideas have caused too much heat to stay in the unit and burn the finish off. Usually around the edge of the ash pan. The stone is not supposed to do that. Still searching pros and cons. Just an FYI.

Thanks. I did Google mods for it and may have found the forum. But let me know anyway.

Most of the suggestions involved the seals. On the first burn, I could tell it was going to be an issue. They suggested RTV silicone on it and a bunch of other things. Like I said earlier, I just bent the hook part of the latches. They latch tight now. If I close the bottom vent too much, the temp plummets.

I was afraid you'd say that. Gurus they're not. Leave it at that.

Loving this thing so far. Maybe I got a good one. Instructions suggest lump. But my experience it burns hot and fast. Been using RO briquettes because that's what I had. No trouble holding whatever temp I want.
