  • Boiling Water in Dutch Ovens

OK, this is meant to be a serious thread and not one of those funny toast or ramen noodle threads. I just wanted to show folks that yes, you can boil water in a dutch oven.

You'll need to light a chimney full of charcoal because you are going to need what I believe is called a "full bed of coals".

Put your water in the cold oven. You never ever want to add cold liquid to a hot dutch oven.

Sit your DO over the coals.

You want all or most of your heat from the bottom when boiling / simmering. But I went ahead and threw some on top thinking it would help speed things up. It was already 102 degrees...probably just could have sat the DO in the sun.

About 20 minutes later it was at a rapid boil so I threw my pasta in with a little oil, put the lid back on and didn't check it again for another 20 minutes.

Pasta done and still plenty of fuel left.

Chopped my veggies and mixed the pasta salad together in a zip lock bag.

Brush the ash off the lid

DO packed and ready for the trip home where it will get a good cleaning and oiling before next weekend.

    Thanks for looking!
    Becky

You rock Becks! I made a peach cobbler today and ALMOST did it in the DO, but I chickened out. I'm a puss.

Pasta salad sounds really good right now.

Did you bring it to 125 before cooking the pasta to 212?

Great tutorial. DO's can do it all.

Very cool. I've got one of the big, oblong DO's...doesn't seem to cook much sitting the box!

Guess they just intimidate the hell outta me... guess it's time to jump in cuz you certainly can churn out the grub with one, Ms Becky!!

Yes, I did. But I forgot my pasta thermometer so I taste tested it and it had a clean bite threw so I figured it was done.

Exactly who said you cant boil water in a DO......
No one in particular but I think there are a few here who would like to know more about DOs and how to cook with them so I'm just trying to show folks how easy it is.

                Re:

Good looking job on that pasta Primavera.

If ya got some of McCormick's Salad Supreme and a bottle of Italian Salad dressing, you'd be in business. LOL

Dress it up with some sliced green olives, sliced scallions, some parmesan
                cheese. Mmmmm mmm

I haven't tried the McCormicks stuff...may have to check it out. I like my pasta with just tomatoes, pepperoni, cucumber and CBP. For the dressing I use either Kraft Sun Dried Tomato or Roasted Red Pepper.

                      more DO stuff -

If I ever move to a log cabin or take up camping, I'll be set !

Now if you had 2 DO's and used the other one for a pasta sauce with some pancetta, mushrooms, sweet peppers, tiger shrimp, ginger, soy sauce, MH and some philli. You'd end up with my dinner the other night :-)
