  • When the hell did cast iron get so expensive?

I've been kicking around the idea of picking up another cast iron skillet and I was in the local super-mega-mart the other day. North of $30 for a 12" lodge?!??! Damn. Pretty sure last time I bought a cast iron pan it was a 10" and I didn't spend more than $15 tops.

Guess I need to start checking out garage sales and goodwill.

Mostly you can blame collectors for running up the prices. You can still, occasionally, find a bargain. But not at most flea markets and antique malls.

Yard and estate sales seem to be the best venues, lately.

As for new stuff, I have no idea what's happening there. I don't buy new iron, so have no idea what the prices are like.

PitRow Go to Walmart they have the 12" lodge for 19.99 which is the best price you will find on one that size and it's made here in the USA.

The last 12" Griswold large slant logo skillet I bought was north of 200.00 I won't say how much north of two bills it was because some times my Bride Big Bula snoops around to see what I say on these sites and I might have Fibbed to her about how much I paid for it. In fact if the truth ever comes out I will more than likely get that skillet upside the head if ya get my drift, LOL Yup life in the fast lane.

Here's a better way to look at it. For $30 you're getting something that will last a lifetime. Everything price wise is getting ridiculous.

Good point! Take care of it and you would never need to replace it.

I hear ya... I've been meaning to supplement my collection for a while, just never got around to it. Looks like I'm now a day late and a dollar short, like usual.

Yeah, I'm not sure why the new stuff is going up so much either, supply and demand I guess, with the used stuff going up in price people must be buying the new stuff more too, so they jack the price cause they can.

Thanks for the tip! The next town over just opened a new walmart, so when I go check it out I'll look there.

Good point, and I don't mind paying for a quality products that will last, but what irks me is the price is now double what I paid for the same product about 5 years ago. That's some pretty serious inflation and/or price-gouging.

I've been able to find old Iron here in Appalachia quite reasonable. Usually $10 to $15 for Wagner, and Griswold occasionally.
A lot of this Iron was made in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

I would just as soon own old Iron as anything Lodge is making if the price is comparable.

Yeah, my iron is Griswold and Wagner mostly, and old... like me! I much prefer it over the Lodge stuff these daze... seems like their quality has gone down, especially in the finish.

Here's 2 10" ones that are at $11.00. You've got about 2 minutes to snag these.
