  • Pissed off!!!!

So last year the garden went in late. This year it was in a week before Memorial day. Several weeks in I'm noticing leaves missing on the cuke plants. Ya'lll know what it costs to do the gardening!
Now the little Ba*&$ has eaten two rows of beans, the cukes AND the radishes! I thought it was a rabbit but caught a woodchuck/groundhog in the fenced in garden.
I have hung pie tins and spread "anti-critter" powder. BUT to no avail!

    Any help would be appreciated!!!

Ok, you did not hear this from me.
If you have a farm store in the area, look for a product called "Golden Malrin" fly bait, by starbar. Its a 1# can and the stuff looks like light blue cat litter. Mix this with a little water and add to some leafy greens like lettuce, cabbage, ect, as woodchucks love vegetable greens. Set in the garden near the entry point if you know where its getting it. If you don't, make 2-3 piles where he is surely to come across it. Once consumed, the animal will not make it more than 10 feet, so if you live in an area that has neighborhood cats running around or dogs that can get in your garden, then this is not for you. This is very very potent. We use it around here to kill coons. They usually die within a foot of the poison dish.

.177 will not even hurt it. If you are using a .22 it better be a long rifle, and in the head. Trust me, shorts don't cut it. They're tough buggers. That'll cause a stir.

Trapping it would not be my first choice. They are extremely fast and evil when cornered. Don't know about you, but I'm not picking up a tazmanian devil in a cage no matter how thick the leather gloves are. And what do you do with it after you trap it? Release it to be someone elses problem?

You're stuck with the bow or poison. Suppose telling the neighbor's wife to mind her own business is out of the question, so tell her you won't kill it if she pays for all the veggies you lose.

Gamo Air Rifle. It'll kill a woodchuck dead quick and real quiet.

pretty sure there's at least one recipe for groundhog on here somewhere. Fair's fair you feed them they ought to feed you :-)

I certainly wouldn't use poison. But a good .22 air rifle should do the trick.
my dad and dave went rabbit shooting the other day one with my weirauch 97k and one with an air arms s440 (summat like that) both got rabbits with head shots :-)
Figure a groundhog shouldn't put up much more of a challenge than a rabbit :-)

I LOVE this thread.. the thought that went through my mind was.. okay..easy on the replies boys..

I've had my fair share of in town/outta town critter control, so I'll add my comments/suggestions below.

First - air rifles are usually okay even in City limits, especially if the are used for varmit control. That would be my first option because not only are they effective, it's just as much fun as stalking elk!

MH - I love any post that begins with what you've got.
I'm with CA - not big on poisons that can be accessed by other animals.. or kids.

Green or "treated" wheat works great on squirrels and chipmunks. If you have a CO-OP or farm supply store, you can usually get it in 1lb bags. http://www.rrproducts.com/p-704850-b...0-lb-pail.aspx

Live traps - cut down a cardboard box so that you have top, bottom and sides - leave the bottom out of it and slip the trap inside it, that way if you capture a skunk, you can handle it without getting sprayed.

Buy a can of starting fluid (ether), give your critter a good whiff, and when it goes night, night, stick your trap in a barrel of water.

DAMN! are we a bunch of sadistic bastards or what??

                            Good luck, Dingle!

That's a simple one...........when we were kids we used to watch where they came out of their "gopher hole" and when we knew they were back in there a 5 gallon pail of water was used to "flush" them out. You have to know where their escape hole is too, cuz they always have two exits. If you don't know where the escape hole is the first time, it will take two "applications" to solve the problem, once you know the second hole. If you don't have an "assistant" in this process, put something over the second hole and the gopher will come out the hole you are "flushing". Be prepared to "dispatch" the varmint immediately.

This is a lot easier and less destructive than the "Caddyshack" method.
