  • Refinishing My Smoker Cabinet Worth It?

    Hey pitmasters,

I've been running my offset smoker for about four years and the cabinet exterior is showing serious wear. The paint is peeling, rust spots are spreading, and the whole unit just looks rough after countless brisket and pork rib sessions.

A buddy suggested cabinet refinishing using high-heat-resistant paint instead of buying a brand new unit. The wood shelving inside my prep station beside the smoker also needs attention. Has anyone here tackled refinishing their smoker cabinet or outdoor BBQ prep station?

What high temp primers or coatings worked best without affecting your food flavor or smoke quality?

I "season" the fire box and cooking chamber by heating it up. Then spray it generously with canola oil and continue heating until oil is dry and metal is cooled. Similar to seasoning cast iron.

Metal is no longer rusty and will remain rust free for some time.

Wire brush and oil it. Hot as hell cook it off. It’s not permanent but either is paint. Couple times a year it’ll be fine.
