SmokinLee posted this in a different thread and I thought it deserved a little more discussion;
"I know this has nothing to do with brining but I have been using this for the last cupla years when I feel a cold or sore throat coming on. Since salt is an antimicrobial and hinders alot of different bacterium, I mix up a solution and snort and gargle with it and usually by morning I'm good to go."
I was havin a beer at one of my local bars(yes I have more than one
), when I met up with a retired doctor. During the conversation he told me that every time he felt a cold comin on he would mix up some warm water and salt and snort it to rinse his sinuses. Claimed he hadn't had a full blown cold in years.
He went on to explain that most cold viruses start in the sinuses and multiply in that "perfect petri dish" then go on to infect the ears, lungs and throat.
I used to get at least 2-3 colds every year that would invariably end in a chest infection and a good dose of antibiotics. I have been doing this for three years and I haven't had a full blown cold since I started.
To paraphrase something Dana famously said recently, I am not a doctor and don't pretend to play one on the internet, but I know some of the folks here have some health issues and the common cold can be anything but common. Another issue is salt intake, if you are on a low sodium diet this might not be for you, since you do swallow a bit of salt during the process, so you might wanna check it out with a doc first.
There are several premixed saline nasal sprays and rinses at your local stores so I'll leave that part alone.
I dunno,
just sayin it's been workin for me too.
