  • My review of the new Wal-Mart charcoal

    A few weeks back I asked if anyone had tried the new Wal-Mart charcoal. I don't think anyone that replied had. So, my curiosity got to me and I bought some. Besides, it felt like a cheeseburger day.

    New for 2012 is a new shape and size. The bag design is also new. The bag comes in an 18 pound size and a smaller, not sure what it was, but about half. On the bag it points out that the charcoal is 60% larger. Here is a few pic's of the new bag design and their claims;

    OK, so we opened up the bag to load the chimney, I am thinking monster sized charcoal, but what I got was different. Here is a pic, kind of fuzzy, but you can make it out alright;

    So, as you can see, they changed the shape from the round/oval shape from previous years, to this Star Wars shape. I would guess that it does have 60% more surface area, but what benefit is that? In this case not much. It seemed about average on start time. There was no odor -- thats a good thing. Typical of charcoal, it puts out lots of ash.

    I don't remember what I paid, so I won't guess. Would I buy it again? Yes, any day over the blue bag stuff.

    Thats about it. Oh yea, the cheeseburgers, yea, they hit the spot.

    Forgot to add something. Seemed like it took longer to start than before. Definitely longer than the lump I used to, but, ya know, this is charcoal not lump. Smoke 'em.

        It is made by Royal Oak , it has the same fire groove as the "new" RO briquette. I think they achieve the larger size by adding more binder and as a result the WalMart version doesn't burn as hot as their brand name version. I don't think I'll buy the Wally world version again, but I do like and use the RO brand briquettes. BTW RO makes the house brand at "Family Dollar" and the "Home 360°" brand found at Hannaford in New England. The former is like the Walmart briq, the latter is comparable to the regular RO.

          I would second your opinion on the heat.
