  • Review - Boar's Head 3 Pepper Colby Jack and Boar's Head Chipotle Chicken

The other day when I was driving around I heard a commercial for some new Boar's Head products.
They have a chipotle gouda, a 3 pepper colby jack, a chipotle chicken breast and a Jamaican jerk turkey.

I was especially interested in the 3 pepper colby jack and the chipotle chicken breast, absolutely love chipotle!

The 3 pepper colby jack is described as so...

Inspired by peppers native to the lush landscape of Brazil, this cheese packs a flavor punch that will make your taste buds take notice. We start with our award winning Colby Jack Cheese. It's characterized by the rich appearance of orange Colby and white Monterey Jack. Then it's spiced up with a blend of three "take no prisoners" peppers. Jalapeno...Chipotle...Habanero...

And their chipotle chicken (which I had no idea it is also dusted with habanero powder)...

Inspired by the culinary delights of the Pacific peninsula of Baja, Mexico, one taste of our new Chipotle Chicken Breast will transport your taste buds to a bustling Mexican spice market. Infused with the deep, rich smokiness of chipotle peppers and layered with habanero chili powder, this chicken breast is a taste adventure. Kick up your ordinary chicken sandwich with a savory chipotle blast.

First the 3 pepper colby jack.
It was alright, the colby jack cheese itself has good flavor but then again it is Boar's Head and they do make some pretty decent products.
As far as the spices it had a really good heat overall which you don't normally find in commercial products even when they claim to have a kick.
I couldn't really tell that there was any chipotle in the slices which was disappointing and the jalapeno flavor didn't come through too much either, I think because the cheese itself has such a powerful flavor it masked the jalapeno but still...no chipotle flavor that I could detect.
I was surprised in one bite to find that I got a piece of habanero and it actually had that wonderful fruity/citrus flavor that I love about habaneros but you usually can't detect due to the level of heat that comes on so fast.
I think the flavors would have been better suited to a cheddar only cheese and for $8 a pound I wish it had more of a chipotle flavor.
    I would give it a 6.5 out of 10

I was very interested in trying the chicken, especially once I found out it was dusted with habanero powder.
The chicken itself is very tasty and has a great, "real" chicken taste that many deli meats lack.
The spices were actually pretty spot on when you got enough of them but I think they could have coated it in twice as much seasoning and that would have been perfect.
You could pick up the chipotle flavor as well as the habanero flavor and it had just the right amount of kick to it, not so much that it burned or lingered but enough that you definitely get the full flavors and it wakes up your taste buds and they ask for more.
I would give the chicken an 8 out of 10.

I would definitely suggest giving the chipotle chicken a try and if you're interested in the 3 pepper cheddar jack maybe pick up 1/4 pound or ask to try a slice at the deli counter to see if you like it before purchasing.

Here's a commercial for their new products.

I heard their commercial also here on the left coast..... Packaged lunchmeat typically does not agree with me, must be the chemicals or something

That's why Boar's Head is one brand I have no problem buying at a deli counter, they don't use a lot of the filler and crap that the majority of other producers use.
Although no store bought compares to homemade far as I'm concerned.
Used to buy loads of pastrami at the deli until I learned to make my own, haven't looked back since
Especially cause a lot of the strami from the deli has a texture more like rubber than succulent cured meat.
