  • Going Camping? Don't Want To Haul Your Smoker?

Not sure if this is the right place for this post, but if not, feel free to move it where it belongs.

A few years back my wife and I spent a lot of time camping during the Summer months and I spent a lot of time fighting with one of those swinging tripod grills that every camping goods store sells. It worked, but I never was truly happy with it. When we went to the flea market at Shipshewana Indiana I ran across a display of these Graber grills and knew right away that this was the answer to my campfire cooking prayers. It's simple to set up and use and you can get a storage case for it too. It's cantilever design gives you infinite height choices to help control the heat. I've been using mine quite happily either camping or up at our lake place for years.

Now for the smoke part. A number of years ago I had a Weber dome lid charcoal grill that the bottom finally burned out of. When I went to set it out to the curb for the trash men, the packrat in me came out and snatched the lid back. Not knowing what I was going to do with it, it sat in my shed for a couple years until a brainstorm (fart) hit me. I've always hated to pour water on my campfires to put them out before bed because I hate the muddy mess you have to build the next mornings cook fires in. One time while putting one out, I wished that I had something to set over it instead and Voila, my stashed Weber grill lid came to mind. Needless to say, the next time we went up to the lake the lid came along. It got used for a couple years just as a campfire smotherer (?) working very well at keeping the wind from scattering coals and ashes and as an added benefit, I'd always have plenty of hot coals to throw a little kindling on the next morning to start the morning cookfire.

Sometime later I was cooking a spatchcocked turkey over the fire wishing that I could trap the heat around it so it would cook quicker and my eyes fell on the Weber Fire Smotherer. (Another Voila!)

So now, pretty much everything I cook over our fire up north, gets browned over high heat on the fire, then the lid goes on and the grill comes up so it finishes low and slow. It traps the smoke under the lid beautifully giving everything you cook under it a great smoke flavor. That, in combination with the adjustable height of the Graber grill gives you the next best thing to having your smoker along.

Sometimes I'll prebuild my campfire, not lighting it so that it's ready come suppertime or nightfall and if rain threatens, the trusty Weber Fire Smotherer turns into a handy Fire Umbrella. I cover my kindling pile with it when not being used for other purposes.

So keep your eyes peeled for them Weber lids in the trash, you never know what uses you can find for them.

The above pic is one I snagged off a website selling the Graber Grills. I will post a pic of mine in action complete with The Weber Fire Smotherer/Smoker/Oven/Umbrella the next time I come back from the lake.

Now that is what I call a useful post! I've seen folks take the legs off a Weber Kettle to use as a portable grill but using an old lid for multiple purposes like that is priceless. I'll be on the look out for one myself now or you can tell me where your lake house is and I'll just grab that one. 8^)>

My 1980 Weber is showing no signs of giving up yet!

Thanks for the points Rich. I don't know what they are or are for, but thanks. I've tried to find out what they mean, but so far no luck.

Icruzen, you're more than welcome to swing by the lake place for a fire cooked meal if you're ever up Harrison way when we are, but ya can't be swipin' my lid. I've actually pulled 3 of them from the trash and sold them for $5.00 apiece to folks that have seen how I use mine. I've actually thought about putting an ad in the paper asking for them, refurbishing them and selling them for a little more than that with instructions of ways to use it. I could clean up at campgrounds.

They really don't mean alot other than folks like your posts and ideas. The more "points" you get the more of the green tiles you accumulate up in the right corner of your name on a post, and the more folks have liked your ideas/posts.

You can also give negative points... if you really have a problem with an idea/post...but I have never done this. Sometimes I just shut up...believe it or not heh! Actually, if I have a problem with a post it's usually a technical or saftey issue and I bring it up right in the thread.

You can view who gave you points for what by clicking on the "User PC" menu choice just under the Smoked-Meat Logo.

Do you give points by rating the thread? Or does someone read the posts and assign them? How do give points?

Michichef, we give points for many reasons. For folks who do an outstanding smoke, or help others,or give great advice or cool recipes. There is so much of the good stuff going on here, its hard to give points where they are deserved, but we try. They are called reputation points, but are given for many reasons. Its kinda like a pat on the back from a good freind for a job well done, or a thank you for good advice.

Hmmm! Great idea and have given me a thought. Those mini weber lids if ya can get one might be the ticket for a small self basting oven kinda thing inside a smoker like my lang. Drop a bird in and cover. Smoke comes in from the bottem and goes out the lid tip but heat held in somewhat . Hmmm. Points to ya!

Graber grill you say, interesting. Wonder how long they been around? I made something similar but crude years ago. I took some angle iron, a piece of 1" rebar and expanded metal and made a grill. The rebar goes down into the ground and thats how you adjust the height. The Weber lid is a fantastic idea. I have 2 extra Brinkman Gourmet lids I could use.

You gave out some terrific ideas. That is what this place is all about. Each of us helping each other even when we don't even know we need the help. You get points my friend, yes sir.

                          camp fire cooking

Some of us here are old enough to remember when milk crates were made of heavy metal wire. These days eggs are sometimes still shipped in them.
These crates are one of my must haves for camping.
Turned upside down you have a sturdy stove that will support your biggest DO. to cook in the coals you can place food inside the crate and lower onto the coals and add coals to the top . when done just pick up crate and shake the coals will fall out . They are getting harder to find so when i can find one it goes to the shed.
