  • Expert Grill Lump Charcoal

So I was in Walmart and walked past a giant skid of this:

30 lbs for $14.88...and besides, it had a cow, chicken, pig and fish on the bottom of the bag...how could I say no to that? So I left with a couple of bags. I cruised through the store, and they had at least 3 pallets that I found.

Inside the bag on the top were some giant pieces.

Completely filled up my giant man hands

I dumped some in the charcoal chimney and only a few pieces completely filled up the chimney. I had to sort through the bag a little to get past the giant pieces on top. I'm sure that the bottom of the bag has much smaller pieces and dust, but on top there were some big pieces. I just didn't want to dump out 30 lbs of charcoal to see what was what.

These three chunks completely filled up the chimney...check out my "Mojito" patch of mint in the background....Hmmmmm that sounds good for this afternoon.

Anyway, It lit quickly, and smelled like good lump charcoal. I couldn't find a source or mfg location on the bag, so my guess is it a south american hardwood. I know someone will immediately respond with "I only buy this brand from this location" or some other snarky bull shit, so let me say up front just save it. The majority of us buy what is available or what is on sale and it produces some awesome eats. I'll update this as I get further in the bag, and I'm throwing a tri tip on the smoker this afternoon. I'll post that separately. But my initial observations are positive so I say grab and bag and give it a go...I'll probably restock my shelves.

Looks like some nice lump. Thanks for posting. I bought some royal oak the other day and not many big chunks in there, wasn't too impressed.

I just brought home a bag yesterday morning. Haven't opened it yet but it feels like some huge chunks. @ 50 cents a pound I figure I cant go too wrong. The RO crap is more than twice the price. Not going there...

          Hey Aaron,

I have also used B&B...In fact, I have some B&B Mesquite in my current inventory (yellow bag to the right). I don't like Mesquite smoke wood (sorry Tex), but mesquite lump charcoal is a totally different animal. I love trying different charcoal, and I have a pretty good inventory. I usually buy cheap and in quantities. In fact every bag I had was on sale including the pellets that Mrs. Engineer got for $4.97 on a blowout clearance at Costco. The funny thing is that I don't have a pellet grill. I gave 120 lbs (3 bags) to my pellet poopin neighbor and the rest I use in a smoke tube.
