  • The double barrel is finally finished!!

There is a sense of pride in building something yourself and being able to use that device to feed your family and friends. Kind of puts a man in touch with his inner cave man.
Anyway, I painted and seasoned my smoker today! And am now ready to start smokin!! I'm going to have to start hunting for more fire wood. This thing is a wood burning machine!! I started the fire this afternoon (it's still burning ) and I bet I have burned 2 trash cans full of wood. I'm going to try and let it season all night. If I don't fall asleep in my chair.
I need to get a couple of thermometers, then I can begin smoking.
Quick question for you stick burners. Do y'all start your fires with charcoal and then add wood? Or just strictly use wood? Does it matter?
Thanks to all for your input and comments.

              Re:

Yep, burn it in & season today. Friday's just around the corner and you can get your first smoke on then. Meanwhile ya could get to the store and
find some meat and 2 gallon plastic zip lock bags to brine it in so the meat will be ready. Plenty of recipes for rubs here or you could buy some ready made's. (ya might try some ribs, some sausages, and a small butt)

Meanwhile get those thermometers in there at grill level and you should be
be good to go for your first smoke.

Will you have water basins to sit over the heat tubes coming up from the fire box ?

I was going to use aluminum pans filled with water, but your saying put them directly over the heat tubes?? I was going to put them in the space between the tubes? I worry it will deflect to much heat?? Now ya got me thinking.......

                  Lookin Goood!!

Maybe a charcoal basket for lump about dead center of the bottom barrel?

Add chunks of flavor wood every so often.

Could even put a plate across the bottom of the smokin chamber that was bent into a slight V. Then have the plate drain to the left to a bucket for grease on the outside.

Have the plate stop opposite the chimney about 2-4 inches.

Be kinda Like a reverse flow?

Just trying to give you some more fun things to think about!
