  • Possible platform for smoker build?

    Gang-

Been fascinated by the gravity fed smokers, just learing now how they work.

I have this old Laboratory oven sitting in my garage that I was going to use for powdercoating, but decided not to.

What do you think? Its clean, all it was used for was heating up parts to be pressed into assemblies

I would gut the heater out of it.

I was thinking about making it into a gravity fed, or a Backwoods style pit with the coals in the bottom.

But I dont know, might be too much work, but maybe not?

Its SUPER insulated and SUPER heavy

I would paint it black of course...

Looks like a great start depending on what the interior is made of. I made mine similar out of a dishwasher. You're already 90% done with that oven for a start. I haven't looked at gravity feed smokers tho.

Dishwasher Smoker, Chargriller, Casing Pit, STX #12 grinder, LEM 5# stuffer, MIL slicer, AMNPS

I want to cook for a living, eventually

Sounds like it's already a smoker, just add an amnps.

          no

no wattburner. I already have one of those...

            Re:

I'd suggest you consider checking out this oven to see if it is in good working shape and then seeing what you could get for it. It may fetch enough money to fund a real "build of your dreams" project, which may weigh less
than 40 lbs and be more portable if you need to move it.

I could see a brick back yard BBQ where this could be set into it once it's
converted to a smoker that will work. If it were sheltered this way it could
probably be used all year around. But at 250# I'd imagine it being in a stationary setting.

the problem is it runs on 480v and I cant power it up to see if it works or not.

I did try to sell it but did not find any interest, and i dont want to just give it away

its kind of a fosill as these ovens go

I would build a stand for it with nice wheels if I decided to do this. It may not weigh 250lbs, but it takes 2 people to move it. Its gotta be close to that

But, yeah, it might be too heavy to be practical. I dont know

a baby Stumps weighs 375 lbs, for comparison

                Re:

                ButtBurner,

If you have a VOM meter you should be able to get on the electric grids and see if they have continuity. If the meter reads then they are good.

The control to those heating grids probably runs off a step down transformer
at 120V. (but it could possibly be 220v)

If you have a friend who is an electrician the two of you could probably
check it out with a meter to determine if it is functional without having to
                have a 480v source.

It wouldn't be worthwhile trying to convert it to 120v grids as it would take 4 times the power to use it.

But that's just an idea to determine if it could be sold.

thanks but I am not interested that. I tried selling it but did not have one call.

If you have an electrician friend, possibly you could convert the heating element to 120 VAC. You would still have to add smoke.

With the stainless interior, it sounds interesting, being it is well insulated. Maybe even convert to a pellet burner!

You certainly could try to convert it to something like a backwoods, but you will have to start off with something that is already made so to speak and retro fit it.

Personally, the amount of time to do it, you might just be better off starting from scratch and building it exactly the way you want and try selling it again.

If not for the 480 thing, I'd take it for a powder coating oven myself.
Craiglist is free. Start from scratch and advertise that thing on craigslist locally as well as some outlying areas until it sells. Someone will see it eventually.

On edit, I have a chitload of things I'd like to turn into smokers. If I did, I'd more smokers than Fishawn has kettles. Ok, maybe not, but you know what I mean.
List that thing as a powder coating oven and I bet you get a bite.

its been on Craigslist on and off for over a year. I want to do something with it. No one wants to touch it without seeing it work, unless I practically give it away, and I really dont want to do that.

I think it would make a perfect Stumps clone.

I agree that would make a good start on a stumps clone. It's got to be well insulated with the heat it was designed for...so build ya a gravity feed system add a exhaust and you should be good to go.
Of course you have to post plenty of pics along the way

                              thats what I was thinking.

I could rip out the bottom grid and the heater, that would give me room for the heat deflector and drip tray. Make a panel to cover up the switches.

I just need to figure out how big to make the fire box and chute.

And weld some legs and wheels on it
