YS640 Outer Fan Diffuser Procedure

Yoder has developed an update to the YS640 Pellet Grill which adds an outer fan diffuser plate to help with evening out the temperature across the entire cooking surface. I sent an email to customer service at Yoder and they shipped out a diffuser kit for free!

Here are a few pictures of the process, but basically it involves removing the hopper/controller panel that the outer fan is attached to and install the diffuser onto the fan with a couple of bolts that are included in the kit. Then re-attach the panel to the hopper/controller.

Instructions:



Panel Removed (make sure to keep track of the wiring to the fans. In my case, the green wire was towards the inside of the controller and the white/yellow wire was towards the outside of the controller)


Diffuser Attached


Reattach the wiring and reattach the panel to the hopper/controller.

Brian, I did the procedure after I had done my recent smokes so there is still some determination to be done. I did smoke some burgers at 425 after I had done the add, and it seemed to help with getting the YS640 up to temp faster and seemed to keep the temp consistent. But given that it was a rather quick cook, it didn't validate whether the add-on will help in a longer smoke at a lower temp. My next smoke will include some additional validation and temp checks to see if it really does provide the more even temps across the entire cooking area. My gut is that it will... how much is TBD. At least the price was right!!

Easy to find out... You should be able to see the diffuser plate through the fan using a flashlight or take off the panel for a quick look.

I'll definitely update as I do more testing.

Our 640 is 2 years old this month, I have added a 2nd fan as suggested by Yoder but not the diffuser... may have to get a hold of them and see what all updates ours may be missing. Ours has been a perfect gem since day one but with only a year of warranty left on the control systems I would like to go out of warranty having all the available updates.

Probably a good idea. I just shot an email to customer service at Yoder (customerservice@yodersmokers.com) and Bryon sent one out. Love those guys at Yoder! Awesome service and really back their products!

I was sent the diffuser about 8 months ago and installed it, did not work well for my rig - threw the temps way off. I spoke to Yoder and after some testing I went back to no diffuser and things returned to normal.

In short, if things are working well on your Yoder, you may not need it although it is worth trying to see if it does.

Is this limited to the 640 model? Or does this apply to all Yoder Pellet Smokers?

Just wanted to provide an update on this issue. I spoke with Byron today at Yoder and this also applies to the 480 as well as the 640. He will be sending the part to me as well free of charge. I suspect that if you have other models such as the 1300, you may be eligible for this change.
