Thanks Phil. This was just some of stuff that I went through before I bought my Yoder, with some updates on more recent models.

Like I said, you cannot go wrong with a Yoder pellet smoker, but there are certainly others to consider. It all boils down to your desired feature list and budget mostly.... when I was finalizing my purchase, I had narrowed it down to 3 models that fit into my budget.... Yoder YS640, Rec-Tec and GMG Jim Bowie. I really liked the MAK grills, especially because of their highly programmable controller and excellent quality... but I couldn't swing the $2500 that it would have took to get a MAK 2Star without getting shot! I have been extremely happy with my YS640 and the decision that I made... but everyone has to make their own decisions based on their own criteria, which may not be the same as mine.
    Smokem if you got em

The only pellet burner i have used is tinfoil wrapped pellets and Amazn clone.
I would go for made in AMERICA if i had that choice. Then again i am pregidice.
      Good luck to your friend.

I've owned a MAK 1 star for almost two years. I'm very happy with it.

I've been burnin' pellets for the past three years in the GMG Daniel Boone. As much as I love it, I'd go with the Yoder in a heartbeat, 'specially if you have the boss ready to pony up the bucks for it!!! The GMG service is great, but there have been a few problems with it. Nothing that can't be fixed, but still frustrating at times.
I'm sure Yoder has it's own set of idiosyncrasies, the they are built to last forever. Plus I love the fact that it's built right here in the heartland.
