  • GMG Davy Crockett Part 2

Couple years ago I posted about my GMG failing and tech support not being much help. I did fix it.
    http://www.smoked-meat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=45606
The problem ended up being the multi connector that goes to the control board.
Well recently I was smoking a butt and noticed after 20 minutes the unit had turned off. I restarted it and 15 minutes later had no lights on the controller, butts went to Weber. I finally tore in to it remembering the previous adventure, pulled the control board. Ziggled the multi and the lights blinked on and off. Looked like this,

    Note the discoloration

    Side view,

    Unhooked the power!
Pulled the connector off the board. on the opposite side from the clip there are slots (sorry no pic). I put a jewelers screwdriver in the end slot and pressed the clip that holds the metal part in, pulled it out. I bent the contact point out with the screwdriver. This end wire is the power input. After making sure it now made solid contact, I reassembled and tested. Left it run for 1/2 hour, several cycles. Turned it on and off several times seems to be fine.

If you call tech support they will tell you it is the thermal sensor or the control board. Try the multi pin before replacing the sensor or board.

Sorry I didn't get better pics of the connector apart, not going back in.

IF it fails again, I could maybe replace the metal sleeve connector.
Next step after that will be soldering it, trying to not do that.

    Hope ya don't need this!

I use this stuff on all my electrical connections. Alway the truck lite brand. There are other types but they do not seem to hold up.

Yep, those Molex connectors were a nifty invention bhut they can be a royal pain in the bhut sometimes... I couldn't tell you how many I have replaced or repaired like you did over the years...

Not to mention the occasional campfire

          Good call!
There was no apparent corrosion, I think it was loose to start with and slowly burned. Still a good idea, I have some.

My professional opinion..that board is not only poorly designed, it’s poorly protected.Quite a bit of crap and oxidation on it.

That connector obviously is undersized to handle the current flow of that particular circuit at the end. Don’t tell me it’s the friggin’ igniter or auger??

I’d remove and solder. But that’s just me never wanting to deal with that POS again.

Never had that problem with wood and charcoal... Just sayin'...

And like Rich said, that's not a good design on that board. I was a printed circuit board designer for MANY years before I retired. I know my chit...

Naaaawwww, you never feel asleep sittin with a beverage next to the cooker, never, ever.....

Yea GMG is a Treager knock off, remember the controller problems after they were bout 5 years old.....Hello! I suspect the board is the same, (never looked at an old Treager though). I don't want to solder the wires on cause I suspect those caps are nearing their "lifespan", as they all do.
