  • What Is A Normal Sized Butt?

Er . . . pork shoulder that is.

I'm sure I've seen folks here posting pics of pork butts in the 10 pound range. Was at a store last week that had 2 packs and am pretty sure they were in the 10 pound range for each one.

But the butcher at my local Safeway says the 5 or 6 pound ones that they sell are whole and not spit. They seem kind of small to me.

So what is the "average" size for a bone-in pork shoulder?

Around here, 7 to 10 pounds is pretty average... 10's being a bit more scarce.

Dave, what I am finding out down south here, is that the butts are coming already split and wrapped in those 5 lb ranges to our grocery stores, they are trying to cut out the need for a "meat cutter" in the ralphs, safeways etc...
I can still get full butts at RD though, also the mexican "carnecerias" have whole butts cryoed with 2 in a pack, they run about 10lbs each, and still have the fat cap on.
Im gonna have to look for a Dan sized butt at RD, dont think I have seen any butt that big... thanks for showing us your butt Dan!

I had a feeling that's what was happening.

Yes, there is another store here in town that appears to be similar. That's where I'm sure I saw the double-pack. So, for next time I'll pick up a double pack and toss one in the freezer and do a single 10 pounder instead of two 5 pounders.

I run a meat dept here for a local chain and most of what I see are in the 10 lb range , a 5 or 6 lb butt roast would be one cut in half ,IMHO .

This is a great question. I got me thinking.. What is the perfect size of butt, so I went to Google for the Answer. This is what I got when I clicked on images. Keep in mind this is "Bone in".
