For my co-workers this past Christmas I did not give them gifts. Instead I made homemade dog treats for their dogs and they were a huge hit! I have already been asked several times when am I going to do more?
A local Save a Lot carries just about every pig part that I can imagine. A pack of 2 – 3 pig ears is about $2.00 or $3.00. I think I had about 20 and had to do them in batches. The first batch I smoked puffed up like a pie shell would if you did not poke holes in it but the dogs loved them anyway. With the second batch I took a knife and stabbed several holes in the ears and they turned out much better. I smoked them about 4 hours with hickory. I also made 2 dozen cheesy carrot muffins. Recipe for those is below the pictures. All the dogs loved both the muffins and pig ears. The dogs in the picture below enjoying their treats are one of my co-workers.

Cheesy Carrot Muffins
(Makes 1 Dozen Muffins)
1 cup all purpose flour
1 cup whole-wheet flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 cup grated Cheddar cheese
1 cup grated carrot
2 large eggs
1 cup milk
1/4 cup veggie oil
Preheat oven to 350. Grease a muffin tin or line with baking cups.
Combine the flours and baking powder and mix well. Add the cheese and carrots and mix until they are well distributed.
In another bowl, beat the eggs. Then whisk in milk and veggie oil. Pour this into the flour mixture and stir gently until just combined.
Fill muffin tin 3/4 full with mixture. Top with more cheese. Bake for 20 - 25 minutes or until the muffins feel springy. Be sure to let them cool completely before giving to your K-9 friends. One muffin is a great snack for a medium to large dog and half a muffin for toy or small dog.
