  • Soda Pop & BBQ

I have used several types of soda for various purposes in bbq and I wanted to share some of the ideas that I found to be very good, and see what you have used and what you think about the idea of using soda in general.

    Feel free to chime in.

    - One of the best uses of soda I have found came from my mom's Thanksgiving bird recipe. She always used Vernors to baste her turkey in the oven. I have carried over this idea to the smoker with chicken and turkey as a spritz and as an injection and I really like it.

    - I find that Dr. Pepper makes a good spritz on chuckies and briskets, as well as an additive to my bbq sauce for a little twist on flavor.

    - A buddy of mine just brought me some Black Cherry Soda from Wegmans in Buffalo NY and I thought I might try it as a spritz on some pork or even some beef.

I have played with 7-Up and Vernors (Ginger-ale for you non-Michiganders) a few times. The 7-Up makes an excellent "marinade" for fresh fruit, and prevents browning of slices too!

I like the idea of 7 up and fruit.

In my opinion, Vernors has a distinct flavor over some other "Ginger Ales" like Canada Dry. Nothing against Canada Dry or the others, but Vernors is in a slightly different catagory.

Plus any one that grew up in the Detroit area probably has realized the medicinal value of a cup of warm Vernors and a bowl of chicken noodle soup!

We usually cook our hams in Vernor's with pineapple rings on top. I've injected a few too and it's great. Somewhere in one of my recipe books is a recipe I made up for a ham glaze using Coca Cola.

I don't recall that, but I bet it was "gooder than a mother f......!"

On a side note, I always wondered why they called a Vernors and ice cream float a Boston cooler???

Yep, I've seen it on Food Network. Can't remember who made it, but it has been done.

Yeah, Stroh's was a pretty good beer. That's what my older brother drank when I was young (so that's what I drank too).

                        OK... Wiki...

"The origin of the Boston cooler lies in Detroit, Michigan, the city in which Fred Sanders is credited with inventing the ice cream soda. The name has no connection to Boston, Massachusetts, where the beverage is virtually unknown. One theory suggests that it was named after Detroit's Boston Boulevard, the main thoroughfare of what was then an upper-class neighborhood a short distance from James Vernor's drugstore."

Interesting topic Hani... I had never heard of Vernors, so thanks for clarification.... I'm not a Dr. Pepper fan, but have injected Black Cherry Soda in various forms and mixes in Chicken, mostly wings and I like it... I think I may have even thinned BBQ sauce with it???... As a baste/mop...
