  • Review: McCormick Grill Mates Backyard Brew Marinade.

Was at the store the other day and they had some powdered marinades for .48 cents. I was there to get some thighs to grill so I picked up a few different flavors. The first one I tried was called Backyard Brew flavor. Now I am going to start by saying this stuff is no Mad Hunky...

Ingredients: Standard over the counter rub stuff. Salt was the second ingredient listed, but had Garlic as the first ingredient.

Ease of use: Very easy to make up just add some beer, oil and vinegar. Though it doesn't make a lot of marinade. It only has 3/4 cup of total liquid added to the mix. And it says it is enough for 2lbs of meat. I found myself flipping the gallon size bag a few times. I followed the packet advice and marinaded for 1 hour.

Flavor: The stuff wasn't bad but reminded me of a fast food flavor on chicken. combined with the smoke I thought it was a solid taste, but there was no "POP" or anything that spectacularly stood out.

Overall: When combining to the above factors I'd give this a solid 6.5/10. I will keep this on hand because it comes together quickly, and does have a decent flavor profile. And for .48 cents it was worth it.

You never know unless you try it, and a 6.5 outta 10 isn't a waste. Thanks for TOFTM. (taking one for the team)

Some days I think Bravo Zulu, other days it's more like Whiskey Tango Foxtrot...

Interesting that they are "branching out". they have a blister pak of spices...all separate- for specific things now I have seen..like chili, beef stew...etc. I guess you feel like more of a cook adding them in one at a time?

I have seen some new dry brine products out as well. Copy cats....
