  • GoChuJang Korean Pepper Sauce

Been hearing the term GoChuJang quite a bit as a sauce or marinade. I had no idea what it was, so I looked it up. Google Results Here.

From Wikipedia... Gochujang or red chili paste is a savory, sweet, and spicy fermented condiment made from chili powder, glutinous rice, meju powder, yeotgireum, and salt.

Sounded good, and I have seen it on chef type food network shows, so I threw some in the Amazon cart and bought it with my next order. There are several ways to buy this, but I bought the hot sweet sauce...

I just squirted some on a Dorito...sweeter than I thought it would be, but I have to say, I ate a lot of chips with it on them...several days in a row. The bottom line, I'm going to try different varieties and different manufacturers, but I predict this is the next Sriracha, and definitely a good find.

Here it is on a plate with a smear so you can see it. It has a lot of flavor.

Check it out if you are so inclined to experiment with fun new things.

Mine wasn't crazy hot...I'd say more Medium, but Mrs. Engineer exclaimed "That's got some heat"!

The heat can vary on this is what I found researching your question...this article actually proclaims this as the hottest sauce on the market (meaning popular)...move over Sriracha, there's a new sauce in town!

                Thanks!

Will have to give that a shot. I spent time there and I may have eaten it at some point but it's been too long. I really have no idea what I ate over there. Could have been family pets for all I know. It was an informal atmosphere when I was there for a couple of months .

Funny thing is, under the items usually added was this:

                Secret Aardvark Habanero Hot Sauce

Now, that I know and it's very good. My youngest eats it on everything. Not too hot but has some kick.

However, I do like a sweet heat so hopefully the new addition will turn out well.

                    Yeah, that would be good....

However, quick search and this is the deal:

"Gochujang's primary ingredients are red chili powder, glutinous rice powder, powdered fermented soybeans, and salt. Korean chili peppers, of the species Capsicum annuum, are spicy yet sweet making them ideal for gochujang production.

Other recipes use glutinous rice (chapssal, Korean: 찹쌀), normal short-grain rice (mepssal, Korean: 멥쌀), or barley, and, less frequently, whole wheat kernels, jujubes, pumpkin, and sweet potato; these ingredients are used to make special variations. A small amount of sweetener, such as sugar, syrup, or honey, is also sometimes added. The finished product is a dark, reddish paste with a rich, piquant flavor."

                    So, No.

Really fabulous ingredient. I discovered it several years ago when my son was dating a lovely Korean girl whose mom owned a Korean restaurant. If you have an Asian market near such as a Super H Mart, you will find several different brands.

I get up early. Really early by most people's standards. I make breakfast for both me and Mrs. Engineer and pack it up so we can eat at our desks when we get to work. This is today's breakfast along with a cantaloupe / honeydew / blueberry smoothie...it is a bacon, egg and cheese omlette with some Gojuchang covered tots...it is so good. The gochujang that I bought is a sweet heat and i swear it could easily pass as a spicy BBQ sauce. Very flavorful with a nice heat level. I highly recommend that you try some.

We are fortunate enough to have a major Asian market right up the road from us. I will be stopping in there soon and look for this, thanks Dana.
