  • Minnesota Wild Rice

I was talking with someone yesterday and they were telling me about Minnesota Wild Rice. Said they just came off vacation and had tried it. Said they loved it. Said it was the best rice they had ever had, but that is was actually a grain and not rice? Any of you ever tried it? Thinking about ordering online. Can you get this stuff at the grocery store?

It's a grass seed. So it's called out botanically. It's still a grain however. Delicious earthy flavor. I think of it as almost "mushroom-y".

Just ordered some online do a search here on it...

It's a grass seed, but so is rice. It just has a lot more and different flavor.

Both real good, wild has more flavor. Maybe get a pound of each!
I got the cultivated last time, might try the wild next time.

I bought the wild. But I have not yet compared the two.

Good folks there, I had a couple email exchanges with them. Ask 'em!

                        Different taste

Its a whole lot different than any rice i have ever tasted. I always seen erain had wild rice in his stuff so i bought some last time i was in northern Wisconsin.

Like Rich said its 'earthy" tasting, not bad, just different.

hey gang, not wanting to say i am a WR know it all, but it does come from my area so i do know a bit about it... let me share.

wild rice is sold in two options, the "real" or "organic" wild rice, or "paddy grown" wild rice.

you can physically tell the difference between the two by color. the "real" stuff is a lighter color, a grey to brown in color. while the "paddygrown" or commercial grown is almost a black color.

also the "real" has alot shorter cook time, exactly why i am not 100% sure but think it has to do with the fact when is harvested the rice kernals are parched over a fire of some kind to aid in the removal of any chaff. maybe the "paddy" grown is done mechanically or something. but long story short, the shorter cook time plus what i believe to be a much tastier product would make me recommend the "real", or "organic" (one and the same), may also be reffered to as "lake" rice.

3montes also had a thread where he was offering to sell some, had my interest when i seen the pictures of the riice in his post. i ordered a couple pounds to try. that thread is here if you want in if he has enuff.
