  • Drink of the week...Hemingway Daiquiri aka Papa Doble plus bonus maraschino cherries

As promised, the Hemingway Daiquiri. The legend has it that he ordered a double, so it's also known as the Papa Doble. There are a number of different reipies for this. Mine comes from my favorite cocktail book.

    1.5 oz white rum
    0.25 oz maraschino liqueur
    0.5 oz fresh grapefruit juice
    0.75 oz simple syrup
    0.75 oz fresh lime juice

Shaken and poured into a cocktail glass.

A very nice daiquiri, the maraschino and grapefruit are a nice astringent balance to the sweet rum and sugar.

    Bonus: maraschino cherries
My favorite winter cocktail, the Manhattan calls for maraschino cherries. Those nuclear red things in the supermarket are great for shirley temples, but are actually kind of nasty. Real maraschino cherries are sour cherries that are soaked in maraschino liqueur. The liqueur is made from sour Marasca cherries. So, I'm on the lookout for sour cherries (many of which are grown in Michigan and should be in season very shortly) so that I can make some real ones.

    Hey Scott,

good looking daiquiri...Is the maraschino liqueur readily available? Hell I'll make one this week. (That's why it's the Drink of the Week)!

I'll search for the maraschino liqueur and see what I can find.

I didn't have trouble finding the maraschino liqueur. Have you ever used wine searcher? It's good for finding booze too. You can narrow the search to your state.

I'll try a couple local places that I have good luck with...Kansas has some really back assed liquor laws...I mean seriously messed up. The Cachaca I used for last week's DOTW I had the wife pick up for me on a trip to Colorado. May be able to find it here now...There are a couple big liquor places close by, or I just jump over the state line to Missouri...I don't think they have any laws.

Summary from wikipedia": 100 years ago, "maraschino cherries" were "marasca cherries preserved in maraschino". Today "cherries (not marasca cherries) are preserved in a brine solution usually containing sulfur dioxide and calcium chloride to bleach the fruit, then soaked in a suspension of food coloring (common red food dye, FD&C Red 40), sugar syrup, and other components."

I like this too: "maraschino cherries, which (are) considered mainly decorative and not a foodstuff."

Now I want to make my own even more!

We had some regular eating cherries that weren't going to get eaten. So I pitted them and made my first batch of real maraschino cherries. Now I need to wait at least a couple of days to try one. Still looking for sour cherries.
