  • Scored on a slicer today.

I scored on this Hobart slicer today. Got it from the Su Chef where I work. He's had it in his garage for better than a year now without using it so he said he'd rather see it go to someone who would get some use from it.

    1/4 horse motor and a 12" blade.

It was so dirty when I brought it home it looked like it had been sitting along side of a dirt road for a year. Wiped it clean and it started right up, no problem. The things that are a problem are some rust on the blade and that the slide arm and cut thickness adjustment are so dry that they work...barely. I am more than confident that they will be just fine with a bit of lubrication. Some of the blade's rust came off just by scrubbing with a rag and I am pretty sure I can get the majority of the rest off with some steel wool.

Anyone have some insight as to the rust removal and what type of lube I can use for the rest of the moving parts? The Su tells me that when he got it his father did a complete overhaul on it and that it was working perfect. Problem is that it sat in his garage, right on a dirt road for a year or more.

I'm close with this one, just have a few more steps to take.

    Dave

I picked up some food grade silicone from..... well I do not remember but I believe it was from "The Sausage Maker". I would think you can get some from just about any on line source.

        Couldn't you use some "Pam"?

Great find and the price was perfect!
As previously mentioned, food grade grease to lube and for the rust removal I would use a product called "Naval Jelly"; might sound strange if you are unfamiliar with it, but it works great and comes in a pink container.

PAM will goop up over time... as all lubes..but the silicone food grade stuff takes alot longer. Sausagemaker has it, as does Butcher-Packer, and probably YOUR suppliers too, Dave... ask!

You found a great score. Hobarts are pretty good equipment. I work for the local school system doing maint. work and have cleaned a few of those. The food grade silicone as Cheech said will be your best bet. I had one that was so gummed up nothing would move on it. Finally used WD40 to break it loose but that was all I had at the time. Washed it good and oiled everything and it's still going.

Very nice find. Get you some Naval Jelly for that rust. It'll come right off. I like PB Blaster to free up rusted bolts. Might work good for the height adjuster.

Thanks guys. The rust is coming off nicely with some fine grit steel wool. No problems there. I may use some wd40 just until I can get into Omaha to get silicone from the Hobart store there. This is working out real nice! Now I can finally slice my bacon!!
