  • New scale for sausage making

Well I finally decided it was time to upgrade my scales. I've been using a set of stainless digital kitchen scales that I've had since about 1990. But they only go to 4 pounds (including the tare weight). Not a good thing when you are making 5 pound batches of sausage and snack sticks at the minimum. I needed something better.

So after reading some threads in the various forums about members who liked the Ultraship scales on Amazon, I figured the 55 pound model for $27 was a deal. I threw in some 14" pizza screens so I can make a stackable grate system for snack sticks and got both with free shipping.

Photo is with my 100 gram calibration weight from my 1/100th gram scale set. So this scale is accurate. The nice thing about this one is it also displays pounds & ounces so no more math for fractional pounds.

So now I've got a 500g model with 1/100th gram resolution and a 55 pound model. Guess that covers pretty much everything I would ever need for smoking & cooking.

    Dave

I love coming home. My back porch smells just like a BBQ joint.....

Nice... When you get into making your own sausage and want consistent results when you make/have your own recipe this is the only way to go..

anyone have suggestions for a good scale with 1/10th gram resolution? I found out this weekend that my current scale only has full gram resolution, and starts at 2 grams. Not so good for charcuterie. I could use my reloading scale, but that only does grains, so I'd have to do a lot of calculations.

yeah grains to grams ain't hard tho. 1 grain = 0.0647989 gram Or one gram = about 15.4 grains. But one don't want TOO much gunpowder in the jerky. They used to use that you know. Potassium nitrate... and the sulfer and charcoal din't hurt ya in those concentrations (75 nitrate, 15 charcoal 10 sulfer)

I bought this one for my spices. It has 500g capacity and 0.01 gram resolution. I also bought a set of calibration weights. Mine is from the same company as Mark's, it just has a higher capacity. Works great when making small batches of stuff.

That's a nice scale DWard. My scale has a 5# limit also...I have had to partition chunks of meat and then add them up manually. for $27.00 that's kind of a no brainer.

I've been using the same scale but smaller (ultra-35)for a few years and it's been a good unit.
