Got my slicer today (I'll get to try it on the pastrami). Anyway, took it apart to give it a good cleaning. The blade has an area, not a nick or dent, almost a heavy burr really. Wondering how or if any of you have ever sharpened one. I basically just ran a steel at pretty flat angle over it to work the area out, it seems pretty sharp. I know the Hobarts have a sharpener you just apply to the blade while it turns.

Well, most of the family members have the old Rivals. Dad usually sharpens the blade on the unit, with it running, using a stone. But those old ones were sharpened from both sides and you could move, and even remove the sliding plate so you could get at both sides.
A lot of the newer blades are sharpened from one side, but you still need to hit the other edge ever so slightly to remove any roll over. I have one similar to yous MP, but haven't had to sharpen it yet. I'll have it out next weekend, and see if it's possible.
If you've got a bur on it, I'd use a stone, like a file, to remove it as best as possible. Don't mess with the rest of the blade yet. Run something through it and see how it cuts. A lot of times all it takes is a quick touch up on the flat side. The edge tends to roll that way.
I know this is NOT the safest thing to do. I'm just repeating how I've seen dad do it. Only attempt it if you are confident enough to not cut your finger off. Or buy a new blade. They sell them on-line for mine, there should be one for yours too.S-M Misfit #16

Thanks guys. I'll get it back together and try it out before I mess with it anymore. I've pretty well got the rough area massaged out of it now. So next will be the test. It turns pretty slow, and I think I can even hit the back side with a small pocket stone I've got if need be.sigpic

Also, if you go to a store with a sporting goods/fishing/camping section, more than likely, you'll find sharpening stones there... That's where I get mine. I've seen them in Walmart, K-mart, Dick's Sporting Goods, Bass Pro, Cabella's, etc.
On Edit: Oh, and Harbor Freight has them, along with the diamond files...
