Been surfing and searching to find what the recommend rack heights are when making a UDS using a Weber lid without any luck. I could just go ahead and wing it, but before I start drilling thought I would throw the question out there. Thanks in advance!

What I did was top rack 2 1/2 in. below the top of the drum and the lower rack down another 6 in. Still plent of room for a deflector plate should you want to go that route.sigpic

I agree somewhere 1/2" -1" down to top of grate, its not real critical, my lower rack is 7"? hmm? down from top of barrel. basically i put the top rack just low enough to be able to use the drum lid if need be.Last edited by Pandemonium; 06-11-2011, 07:54 PM.

Hey bud here is a pic of one I built for a local guy here. I went right above the first ring groove....I thought it was 30" up, not positive tho. He loves it and says it works great, I also went bigger on mt air in-lets just to let you know you might want to think about that
another just because it doesn't look good in the pic above...lol
good luck budJerod

Shit! Just drilled the holes and then I see the re-bar idea which I like much better. I can tell you honestly, this won't be the last UDS I make unless the good lord has other plans for me! Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and idea's, much appreciated. Looks like I need to do more barrel shopping!

Here's how I did mine.
Bottom rack 24" from the bottom of the charcoal basket. Assuming the charcoal basket has 3" legs, that puts it 27" from the bottom of the drum.
Top rack just far enough below the lip to mount some bolts for the rack to set on. On mine it sits on the bolts that hold the Weber kettle ring in place.
Worked out to about 5-1/2" above the bottom rack.
