In the middle of a UDS build and came across some spare brass nipples and caps in my dads shop. Any disadvantages? Ive heard some complain about the steel caps getting stuck so figured that shouldn't be an issue with brass. Am I correct in my assumption? Just wanna be sure they're okay from a safety/cooking standpoint?

Brass is a composition of copper and zinc in different amounts, most commonly 70% copper to 30% zinc. You should be ok with it. It won't melt unless you get it to 1700* F.God, Family and Friends is what it's all about. Great food just brings them all together... First John1:9...

Now hold on just a minute, while I side-track this thread. Brass contains zinc... isn't that the main worry in galvanized products, that everyone is always so up in arms about, about not using it anywhere in the smoker, not even a cold smoker?
How come it's ok to use these brass fittings, but galvanized stuff is a no-no anywhere within 15 feet of a smoker? Ok, maybe I'm a little over-zealous on that last part, but it seems to me that you even mention the word galvanized and people freak out.Mike

Galvanized metal products have a zinc coating that inhibits rust that can be harmful, unlike Brass which is an alloy.God, Family and Friends is what it's all about. Great food just brings them all together... First John1:9...
