    Thanks

Sandblasting or a lot of elbow grease with a wire wheel on a grinder.

There has been a lot of debate on this over the years. Conventional wisdom used to be that it needed to be removed down to bare metal. But that can be really hard to do. It's probably the best case scenario but . . . again . . . sometimes it ain't easy.

No one with a chemistry background ever addressed it to my knowledge until Curious Aardvark did in this post.

So if you can't get all the crap off - seriously, it's not a problem just ignore it.

You're never going to clean the inside of the drum, so after a while it'll be covered in smoke residue anyway.
But ultimately it depends on your comfort level. Give it a decent go with a weed burner or something that you can get away with in town. You can try a wirewheel but some of the liners don't even get scratched with a wirewheel. Sand blasting would be great if you can find someone to do it and want to pay the money.

Or just do your best, get what you can out, give it a couple of good seasoning runs and cook.

Again, it depends on your comfort level.

I got sick years ago from all the chemicals i absorbed painting cars, always had a fresh air mask, but that stuff absorbs through your skin. I don't want to be exposed to that stuff as I monitor a burn off , so its going to head down the road if some one local wants to try it or they can use it for a trash can or burn barrel
