  • anyone ever tried encino aka live oak wood?

My neighbor just got about a cord of encino aka live oak and he knows I BBQ and told me take what I want. His buddies that cut down trees gave it to him for free, he asked for a little for occasional bon fires and they dumped a whole bunch on his drive way.

Live Oak is a good wood. Pretty light... works good for heat. Add some flavor wood like hickory/pecan.

If you can remember, bring a split of that in to work tonight as I'd love to sample it. I'm glad I've got a 7' bed on my Ranger

Live oak is pretty much all I use. And like Rich said mix in some hickory chips I like to add cherry or apple as well. grab it and give it a go.

If it is "coast" live oak it is the "red oak" of Santa Maria style BBQ. There are also a "canyon" live oak and an" interior live" oak native to California.
A thought just occurred to me, are all live oaks called red oak in California?

I just looked up Encino Oak. It's not a species - it was a landmark tree.
                From Whiki,
"The Encino Oak Tree, also known as the Lang Oak, was a 1,000-year-old California Live Oak tree, Quercus agrifolia, in the Encino section of Los Angeles, California. It was designated as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument"

I still think it will smoke great but that is historic oak. That tree was sprouted when the vikings were raiding CA's ancestors.
Not sure what, but there might be better uses for it.
