  • ? About Alder

We have 240 acres in Michigan's U.P. that has a trout river flowing through it. Half the river flows through cedar swamps and the other half through tag alder marshes. Is the 2-3" diameter tag alders the same wood that folks use to smoke with? I've never seen any other type of alder.

From what I could find for pics via Google, it does not appear to be the same stuff we have a lot of here in the Pacific NW, which I believe is what most folks use for smoking, especially for fish, around here anyway.

I think it's still used, John. Dunno if it's the same, but I'm pretty sure that's the wood they use at the Indian River smokehouse. Go on and give it a try is my call.

Is that Indian River Michigan Rich, as in up south of the bridge?

I found a Wiki article on alder that pretty much answered my questions.
