  • Cajun injector smoker conversion ????

I have a chance to buy a used Cajun Injector Electric Smoker XL. The gal says it acts up after 5 hrs of use, then after it cools down its good to go for the next 5 hrs.
My question is, is the cabinet insulated so I could make a mod using a brinkman 1500 watt smoker element in the bottom. Since she wants $ 40.00 I think its worth it for the box to start with....Thanks in advance for your inputs...Mike

Maybe its just turning off when it gets too hot and not turning back on for a while. It may just need a thermostat adjustment or a fan

If it is what I think it is, the cabinet will be insulated. I used to have one, and it was a fun smoker until the thing quit working correctly.

Fishawn; you were correct, the cabinet is spray foam insulated. The gal decided to sell it today so went and picked it up. It has all the accessories that came with it plus the cover for $ 40.00. Needs cleaning inside with some citrus cleaner. Thanks again for your input....Mike

Maybe check oot a hot plate with a thermostat also? (Just thinking ootloud)

I think Richtee uses one in his sausage smoker, which if I remember correctly is a former propane insulated cabinet

          Rich?

I use a hotplate in my GOSM for cold smoking and for just putting smoke to sausage and then move it over to the electric to bring to temp.

Not insulated... in the summer I can attain 170-180, winter 150-ish... I do need to insulate it. 1800W hotplate (bypassed thermo) with a 2KW light dimmer for temp control. I can also toss a couple hunks of charcoal in my "RPMorey" to hit 200+. Also use it to hold chips for smoke.

              Here's the cabinet...

Thanks Richtee, was hoping you would chine in sometime. I ordered a 120-240 volt dimmer from China. Its rated for 2000 watts, going to put it in a case. My first plan was to make pid controller but when it was defective upon arrival. I put that on hold.. Have another PID controller being shipped, different brand (MyPin) Will keep you all updated as projects are finished... Thank again for you knowledge and help.... Mike

Place the dimmer in a metal 2 gang box with the "dimmed" outlet mest to it. The metal box is important for heat dissipation.

                    Update
On a whim I emailed Bruce foods and told them what the previous owner said about the unit turning off. Didn't think I would here back from them.. Then around 12:00 this noon I received an email saying they were going to send out a new control panel as they thought this was the problem at no charge.. Boy did this shock me ..
Glad I waited to cut into the box for a while. Will see if it works b4 I use the new pid controller I made and the 1500 watt element.. If it fixes the problem I'll use the pid on the Brinkmann electric smoker.. Thanks for all your input guys ..............Mike
