I agree. I currently have the one my parents bought probably 25 or 30 years ago. It was rock solid and handled probably tons and tons of vacuum sealed food in it's heyday. Unfortunately it sat around un-used for a little too long in the last couple years. It still works, but I think the seals have dried out in it because it doesn't make vacuum anymore. The pump still runs just like the first day, but no vacuum. I need to send it in to Thom and get it fixed up, or find the time to tear into it myself and see what's wrong.

Just tear into it. I bet one of the hoses came off, or something similar. They are extremely simple yet very durable and best of all, serviceable!

Does it look like any of these?

If it's that old, does it look like the second one down and have the Foodsaver name on it? Does it have a nozzle to put the bag under, or a channel in it? If it has a knob to switch from canister to bag, turn it to the canister. Plug the hole with your finger. If it sucks your finger to it and the gauge moves, the internals are fine. Buy a set of seals at the link I provided. Comes with detailed instructions that anyone can follow too.

It's 40.00 + parts + shipping to send it in. If you're in doubt of which seals or parts to get:

        Toll Free: 800-227-3769
        Fax: 206-322-4351

If you're not sure what it is, send me a pic. I may be able to identify it for you too.

yep, it's the second one down. It's been a while since I looked at it last, but I'm fairly certain its the nozzle style, which now that I think about it I think it's missing the nozzle. When I played around with it I couldn't get it to make vacuum on any of the settings / ports. I need to dig it out and look at it again.

We make our bags about 12-15" long so we can reuse them several times - when you open and empty turn them inside out and wash and air dry - cuts down bag cost by a lot

There is a small manifold type piece where 4 hoses hook up to switch to bag or canister. I bet that hose came off from the pump.

Yep, that's common. Or the rubber reed type valve on top of the motor/pump. When they sit for long periods, it will stick and not flop. Just take the top off and making sure they're not stuck. Real common.

Don't see the nozzle in the available replacement parts. Check to see if you have it or not. Maybe a phone call could get you one.
