From everything I have read the cut that comes closest - but by no means is the same as a TriTip is a Top Sirloin roast or a Shell Roast. In Calif, I have not seen either of these cuts of meat.

I would say the sirloin as well, pertty sure the tri tip is just the bottom portion where the sirloin comes from.

            LOL---I wouldn't mess with a Pennsylvanian!!!

They seem to be paying $6+ to $9+ for Tri Tips (with one rare exception at $3.98).

Last year & the year before, during the week before Christmas, Giant had Standing Rib Roast for $4.99 per pound. I call it Prime Rib, because it's better than any Prime Rib I ever had. Other times of the year I've seen it for $5.99.

Prime Rib for less than Tri Tips??? Not a hard choice.

Bee - often times that's the case in CO. Ended up buying a prime for my brother's bachelor party - a full prime rib, because it was cheaper than a case of tri-tips. That was five years ago, and like Bear said, rarely since do you find it the other way around. I just have Keith buy all the Tri-Tip these days...

We found a tri tip in Trader Joes, the only place I've ever seen one in the northeast. A little spendy, but I needed to try one. I know they have some stores in PA, I'd look there if there is a store near you.

don't be afraid of a big ol' chuck roast or steak. they smoke up well and are typically not to spendy. With a roast you could slice them at temp or go all the way to pullin.

Holy cow $7.99 for TriTip? I just got 3 of them on sale for $2.99 at Albertsons. They are normally $3.99 -$4.99. If I could find a reasonable way to ship them I would send you some in a heartbeat. Last time I looked into sending one to Minnesota it as $30 to ship overnite

I think this is a trick question. The answer is TWO tri-tips.

I planned on doing a chuck roast next week after I get back form the honeymoon. I can see it now though. "Man this is really good. But how much better would a tri tip have been" Yeah, I torture myself like that .

Wow ! Huge price difference. I might be able to get some from the local sam's club. Have to be ordered in and they could not give me a price off hand. I will be stopping by tomorrow to see what's what.

hell I just can't afford any beef :-)

It is kinda weird. All the fields round here are full of cattle being grown for meat. And the fields that don't have beef have sheep. But beef is just stupidly expensive to buy and lamb is a joke (not a good joke). Either that or people are just prepared to spend more on it than I am

So I can't really syumpathise with any of you because whatever you have to pay for any cut of beef I'd probably have to pay at least double.

Yup on the Top sirlion. Tri tip is taken off the primal and the Top is whats left. Around here they call that portion a Top Block. But a word of caution; that portion can be a bit tough. What we do is wet age Top Blocks for three weeks in cryopacks, just make sure your fridge is below 39 F. And if you are gonna smoke it beware of the stall(it rivals briskets).

Now that I'm thinking about it I did recall seeing something labeled sirloin tip or sirloin tip roast at Walmart least time I was there, heading out that way tomorrow to stop at the Amish market (another place I didn't think to check but they might have tri tips) but I'll stop in Walmart and snap a pic of the sirloin tip cause maybe it's just a tri tip with another name?
