As most know I was pretty mad about not being able to find tri tip here in PA. Last night I walked into one of the larger stores of a local grocery chain. They refer to these large stores as Market District Giant Eagle as opposed to just Giant Eagle. I went for some of their ready made bacon and Cheddar burgers. These things are great. Made form 80/20 and sold out of the butcher case. So while I am waiting I see this poster on the wall showing the various cuts. Low and behold there it is big as life. Tri Tip Roast. Picture and everything. I ask the guy waiting on me and he says all I have to do is call ahead and they will cut them for me any time.

I am so looking forward to trying my first tri tip. I might be able to do them Saturday. Sunday is booked with stuff so no cooking on my favorite day to do so. All I had time for last weekend was ABT's, pork shots and shrimp skewers on Sunday.

              Sweet!

Because the answer to your original question is . . . there IS no substitute for tri tip.

Most likely going to do two. One with Mad Hunky as I just love that stuff. If I can find what you suggest I will do the other using it. I am about to do an Amazon order. If I can get it there I will combine it with some other stuff and get free shipping on it.

Probably none around here, unless I get a local butcher to custom cut one.

                        You're almost in Ohio, right?

i always figured the try tip as the part of the rump when you separate the muscles you get a wedged shaped muscle

Just outside of Pittsburgh in the lower left corner. I can get to Ohio and West Virginia in 30 minutes. Maryland in about an hour. It is not a regular item for Giant Eagle either. They were very amenable to cutting them out though. My regular butcher offered as well but I could tell it was some form of pain in the arse for him so I never asked him. I am thinking the difference in volume sold is the reason the grocery store doesn't have an issue.
